About the Site (and Me)

*****

It's important to note that I am not affiliated with the Dead Milkmen in any way! I'm just a fan - a gherkin, a little ball of fungus. I've been a passive Milkmen fan for most of my life but didn't really "dig in" until last year, and I continue to be deep in the muck.

It's hard to know where to begin when writing about myself in the context of this site, and why I even made this site, so I suppose shall answer the question:

"Of all the bands out there, why The Dead Milkmen?"

Looking back on my Year of The Dead Milkmen, I realise that this band caught me at an extremely pivotal moment in my life. Which is funny, because in 2020 (an extremely pivotal moment in all our lives, I'd imagine) I was listening to Not Richard, But Dick exclusively for a few months straight. I didn't dig much deeper than that album during that time, and I have an inkling that the discovery of Big Questions in 2025 (which, if I did dig deeper in 2020 I wouldn't have missed out on! But maybe it's for the better) pushed me down the path of the Milkmen and beyond. If you're familiar with the band, you'll know that there is tons to explore with everyone's side projects, solo projects, and of course the band's activities spanning four decades. Once you're in it, it's hard to get out of it, and I figured I'd ride the wave of fixation and put my desire for archiving and researching to good use while it's here.

You can access all the Dead Milkmen fan sites of the past on the Wayback Machine . I think the last one was updated around 2013 (The DM Tabs Project). The fact that the Milkmen released a few albums since then, as well as the Wayback Machine being down a lot of the time, pushed me to take a crack at making a fan site of my own on our current, accessible, World Wide Web. It's been fun to re-learn how to code a site! I'm a very pen-and-paper sort of artist so tapping into this side of my brain has been a real treat.

Okay, next question: "Why did you make a fan site?"

Maybe the last paragraph above is enough of an answer for you, but if you love to hear a guy yap, here's a little more:

If you've ever been in the throes of a deep dive, you may be familiar with the feeling of overwhelm with information, and anguish when there's nowhere to place it. While I have a web of lovely friends who will listen to me go on and on about the Milkmen, talking about them all the time is not something I really want to do. Making this site has been helpful to organize and rid myself of the information that's been rattling around in my head - I'd even say it's been therapeutic to get it all out of my system. Additionally, in my mind, it feels good to do a service for a band that has given so much to its fans. In reality, making this website is purely for my own enjoyment, but of course I hope that this site does a good job of representing the Milkmen/can become a little resource guide to passersby who wish to learn more about the band, or haven't heard of the band at all!

I've also come to realize that the way we engage with media and art has been sort of muddied in the age of social media and streaming. It's become very passive. The Dead Milkmen became my starting-again point of listening to albums in full and with intention - an experience I'll admit I have kind of neglected since I first signed up for a music streaming account. I suppose a website is what manifests from my active engagement. What about yours?

I'm not sure if any of this makes sense or resonates with you, dear reader, but I guess the takeaway is that I've come to really cherish The Dead Milkmen. True lifers who are still in it and handling their legacy in a way that I wish all bands would. It's incredible to know that I'm only one of many who have been positively affected by this band.

"Of all the Milkmen songs you could have referenced for the name of this site, why Swampland of Desire?"

Long answer: Bass rips, Eat Your Paisley! Is my favorite album, and I misheard/misremembered the first line of the song as "I will dream your bad dreams", for so long that I will always consider this song charming.

Short answer: It was the song stuck in my head when I created this website.

Other things that may be helpful to know:

I'm making this site on a 13" laptop, so I'd have to imagine that my resolution is somewhere between a desktop and a phone. That being said, some of the album pages may look goofy on your device, while they look beautiful on mine. Contents are blocked together so even if it does look goofy, the links should be contained and not scattered all around the screen. Maybe if I get really into it I'll figure out a way for the album pages to look good on a desktop - I don't know how to do that at the moment, though!

My audio vessel of choice goes as follows: 1. Cassette 2. CD 3. Digital 4. Vinyl. Inserts I can supply for the album pages will mostly be scans from tapes and CDs. Maybe I'll get my hands on some original vinyl pressings eventually, but in the meantime, if you collect vinyl and are feeling generous, I'd love to plug images of the inserts onto their respective album pages! You can also reference the contribution page for more items I'm seeking.

I am an adult. 29, for your reference. The email is always open for Milkmen-related discussion if you need, but please be appropriate :')

I play bass! I may talk about the bass a lot! The Dead Milkmen were actually the band that pushed me to start taking the bass seriously, after 7-ish years of diddling.

Album Notes

I was inspired by Ben Gladdle (of The DM Tabs Project) to write little comments/anecdotes about the albums. I'm too shy to put them in the album pages themselves, so I'll plug them here.

Thanks for looking!
